notes from D.1.1 on open access

Open access cost for publications: beneficiaries should ensure open access for their peer reviewed journal publications according to the following (grant agreement, page 48):

• Deposit a machine readable electronic copy in a repository for scientific publications and the research data needed to validate the results presented in the publications. More information about repositories can be found here: https://www.openaire.eu/participate/deposit/idrepos.
  • Beneficiaries UCAM and UCL have their repositories:
    • UCAM repository →https://www.repository.cam.ac.uk/
    • UCL repository→http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/
  • Another oprion is Zenodo @ CERN, an OpenAIRE sponsored repository.
• Ensure open access via the repository at the latest on publication if an electronic version is available for free or within six months of publication in any other case. There are two types of open access:
  • Open access publishing: the article is provided in open access mode by the publisher after the payment of its cost. These costs could be eligible under Horizon 2020, but since they are not predicted in UMOBILE grant agreement, the Project Coordinator will contact the Project Officer to explain the situation and ask for approval.
  • Self-archiving: the article is archived in an online repository. Authors have to still ensure open access to the publication within the ebargo period set by the publisher (up to 12 months).
• Ensure open access via the repository to the bibliographic metadata that identify the deposited publication. The metadata must include the following:
  • The terms “European Union(EU)” and “Horizon 2020”;
  • “Universal, mobile-centric and opportunistic communications architecture-UMOBILE”, Grant agreement number 645124;
  • Publication data, length of embargo period if applicable and;
  • A persistent identifier.

Openly accessible research data can typically be accessed, mined, exploited, reproduced and disseminated, free of charge for the user.

Metadata will be comprised of two formats—contextual information about the data in a text based document and ISO 19115 standard metadata in an xml file. These two formats for metadata are chosen to provide a full explanation of the data (text format) and to ensure compatibility with international standards (xml format). The standard XML file will be more complete; the document file will be a human-­‐readable summary of the XML file. .. Access to databases and associated software tools generated under the project will be available for educational, research and non-­‐profit purposes. .... Materials generated under the project will be distributed in accordance with participating institutional and company policies. Depending on such policies, materials may be transferred to others under the terms of a material transfer agreement. ..... The date of the update will be included in the data file and will be part of the data file name.Versions of the data product that have been revised due to errors /updates (other than new data) will be retained in an archive system. A revision history document will describe the revisions made. Regular backups of the data files will be retained at the ....c ....Our intent is that the long-­‐term high quality final data product generated by this project will be available for use by the research and policy communities in perpetuity
